April 20 Education, Health Care, Social Services and Immigration
Some hard questions we hope to address: Aren’t they costing us a lot for schools, health care, social services? Don’t they bring down test scores? Why is their dropout rate so high? Aren’t they bringing gangs into our schools? Why should they take higher education places instead of citizens? Aren’t they overwhelming our public and community health facilities? Don’t they come with diseases and disease vulnerabilities that affect the rest of us? We can’t provide mental health care for citizens and legal residents so how can we do that for these people? If we provide services for immigrants, won’t that encourage more immigrants to move here?
4:00-4:45 pm Discussion: facilitated by Irene Godínez, Advocacy Director
of El Pueblo, Inc.
4:45-6:00 pm Film: La vida no es facil
The video maker's son, Torin Martínez,
will present this film.
Through an interview process, this documentary focuses on various issues affecting
Latinos in North Carolina. Topics covered include in-state tuition and education,
misconceptions of the Latino community, permanent residency, and the impact of Latinos
on the economy.
After the film, students from Pa'lante will talk about their personal experiences
with U.S. education.
