Sunday, March 16, 2008, 5:00 pm, Talk, With Witness for Peace in Venezuela
and Colombia, Mikel Barton. This talk is cosponsored by Chapel Hill/Carrboro
CITCA.
Mikel
Barton was
a Witness for Peace delegate to Venezuela and Colombia in October, and will share
what he learned about political life there and how it is affected by US foreign policy.
His Witness for Peace group from the US met with people in different positions of
society and heard many stories, some hopeful and some horrifying. He discovered that
even if Americans are not aware of our relationships with these countries, their
citizens very much are, and they have much tell us.
Mikel wrote that in October "I returned from a wild trip with Witness for Peace
in Venezuela and Colombia. We were committed to contrasting the differing political
systems and learning how US Foreign Policy affects the people in these countries.
The brain food was delicious and sometimes overwhelming, the emotions were surprising
and sometimes overwhelming, and the whole trip felt like a like a long trek in new
land with a map drawn out of another language and another culture, which I guess
is less a metaphor than reality."
Mikel will show some film clips as part of his presentation.
