San Miguel de Allende was founded over 450 years ago by Fray Luis de San Miguel
and is now preserved by the government of Mexico as a national monument. Built on
the side of a hill 6,400 feet above sea level, the city is located in the state of
Guanajuato, about three and a half hours north of Mexico City.
Cobblestone streets,
flowering gardens, a spring climate year round, simply styled whitewashed homes and
patios characterize this picturesque city. Visitors from Europe and the Americas
return repeatedly to San Miguel because they find it safe, clean and tranquil, and
an ideal setting for work, study, shopping, sight seeing or relaxation.
Throughout
the year, there are a variety of cultural events in San Miguel: concerts, plays,
lectures and dance programs. Since many foreigners have made San Miguel their home,
it has a unique international flavor, yet one is constantly reminded of being in
old Mexico listening to vibrant Mariachis in the central plaza, while enjoying authentic
cuisine and colorful people.
