There are many reasons why a business or an agency might like to offer language
training to their employees.
- In the case of Spanish or Karen, hearing even a little bit of
the language spoken will make Spanish or Karen-speaking customers and clients feel welcome.
Also, group classes provide employees with an opportunity to learn from scratch or
to upgrade their skills, and to have some fun together.
- CHICLE has taught English classes at worksites for employees. Your non English speaking employees
may want to learn English but not have the time to attend scheduled classes. They
may also feel timid about taking classes with strangers. This is an excellent benefit to provide and
as non-native speakers are by definition in a language immersion situation, they often learn quite quickly.
- We have taught French at organizations that work in French-speaking Africa. For advanced students, the classes are to improve their fluidity. For beginning students, the classes are to orient the students and to help them when African co-workers visit.
Learning a language can be a long process requiring study and practice. While not
all employees will have the time or inclination to continue to fluency, they can
all learn some basics.
CHICLE has a course called Introduction to Spanish that
works well in a workplace environment. The course is 12 hours long and we recommend
at least two or three hours a week, in either one or two sessions. We strongly recommend
that all enrollees be free to attend each class and that they not be "on call" during
class time.
If you are a restaurant, a health care agency, a retail location, or other type
of business or agency, we will tailor our Introduction to Spanish course to meet
your needs.
At the end of that course, we can offer our regular multi-level CHICLE curriculum
tailored to the vocabulary and needs of your business or agency as well.
CHICLE also offers cultural training classes
about working and interacting with our growing Latino residents. These classes can
be integrated into the language learning or can be given to larger groups that include
others not studying Spanish.
